New York Fashion Week with Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs’ latest fashion show felt like a series of cinematic stills looking at everyday life through a fashionable lens.

The collection was honest, real and practical, elegant where needed and sporty too. Marc Jacobs Fall 2013 achieved something few can: being commercially viable and editorially significant. The array of cable-knit sweaters, high-waist shorts and skirts styled with a multitude of fur details, unified the looks and delivered the perfect visual impact.

In 2013, there are 200+ Marc Jacobs retail stores in 60 countries. Some of them present only a certain portion of the company’s several brands (The Marc Jacobs Collection, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Little Marc, a children’s line). The various ready-to-wear and accessory collections are also widely available at department stores around the globe.

Jacobs was on Time Magazine’s “2010 Time 100″ list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

New York Fashion Week with J. Mendel

Mendel has shown his Spring and Fall collections biannually during New York’s Fashion Week and recently added Pre Fall and Resort/Pre Spring collections to his ready to wear line. There were so many furs and fur touches that it felt like the prodigal son returning home.

While today there are boutiques worldwide, J. Mendel remains a company focused on the original founding principles. The house has broadened its presence with landmark boutiques located in New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Moscow, London and Paris.

Gilles Mendel knows a thing or two about working furs. And this time, he introduced a series of laser-cut, sculptural sheared mink that could pass for silk corduroy velvet.

Once upon a time a fur coat was a serious deal. Thousands of dollars spent to go to special occasions. It was a huge commitment to by and wear a fur. This is no longer the case. Fur vests and fun jackets lead the way. Anytime one can be popped on without consideration of wardrobe or situation.

The merchandise in our fur store has changed so much over the last 10 years I would have to say we are having a “keep yourself warm sale” as opposed to a “fur sale”. When I think of a fur sale I think of the longer, heavier, dressier fur coats. The mink coat with the big shoulder or the crystal fox stroller with the glamour swing in the back. THOSE ARE FURS.

In the last few days we have sold:

lots of accessories such as headbands and trooper hats to keep your head warm
cashmere. mink- trimmed fingerless gloves to keep your fingers warm while texting
collar and scarves to keep your neck warm such as a pink dyed sable scarf that is as much fashion as it is warmth
light-weight, cropped vests with knit backs to keep you a little warmer during the holiday parties
ponchos, capes and shawls to keep you warm from the car to the restaurant and back and while in the new release movies over Christmas break
the light- weight sheared reversible mink to keep you warm with the fur-in on your trip to New York and then out to dinner with the fur-out

Meet the Mano Family: Julia Galvez

If you stepped into the back office at Mano Swartz you would likely get Julia Galvez confused with the Energizer Bunny. From replacing hooks, to monograms, to major alterations, the master furrier has just kept going and going and going since she started at Mano Swartz in 1986.

Julia, a native of Cochabamba, Boliva, came to the United States in the early 1980’s. Although she went to school to become a seamstress in Bolivia, Julia says she still had much to learn as fur is a very difficult material to work with because of its weight and thickness. As the years went by Julia’s previous training, combined with her work ethic and ingenuity allowed her to master fur work, often even teaching herself new techniques. With over 20 years in the Mano Family, it is no surprise that Julia’s favorite part about working at Mano Swartz is the close-knit, family environment.
